What is ecology?
Ecology refers to the way agricultural products – for example food and textile fibres – are grown and processed. Ecological food production is based on a agricultural system that maintains and recreates the fertility of the soil without using toxic and non-decomposable pesticides and fertilizers.

How can clothing be ecological?
You often hear it, often see it – marketing that refers to ecological clothing and textiles. Especially in connection with cotton. And yes, there can be ecology involved when it comes to clothing. But it is very often, because of how the cotton fibres of the product are grown and extracted. To be more exact it refers to how the cotton plant is grown on the field – if there is used any toxic and non-decomposable pesticides and fertilizers. But when the fibre has left the field - a lot of production processes follow afterwards. And those are rarely ecological. Clothing is therefore only fully ecological in very rare cases. The fibres of a garment can be ecological, but not the ”whole garment”. The marketing for these kind of products should instead be with words like ”Tops made of ecological fibres”, and not ”Ecological tops”.

What is sustainability?
First of all - it is a broad concept. But overall it refers to the way you uphold the natural environment you have around you and avoid to damage future generations ability to cover their needs of the nature. Though it is different from person to person how you percept this level of needs. Secondly there will also always be different perceptions of how to be environmentally friendly. Different from country to country – culture to culture.

How can clothing be sustainable?
In all sorts of ways. Regarding clothing – sustainability can refer to the production and the processes of a garment. For example if the factory gets their electricity from a sustainable source like wind, sun or waves. If the factory purifies the water the use for chemical washing of the fabrics, before letting it out in the nature again. Another example is to make hangtags of reused paper, polybags of reused plastic. Again it is very rare, that it would be true to call a garment for fully sustainable.
